APPLYING FOR NATIONAL REGISTER STATUS

Consider registering your home, business, site, or object on the National Register of Historic Places maintained by the U.S. Department of Interior.  While there is no inherent protection provided by the designation, the building would join those officially recognized for their historic and/or architectural significance, worthy of preservation.   Cazenovia has over thirty National Register properties, as well as a designated Historical Albany Street District in the Village (see listing below).  These properties contribute to community pride in the history of Cazenovia and its built environment, as well as promote heritage tourism.

structureThere are no restrictions placed on private owners of registered properties. Commercial and income producing properties may qualify for State rehabilitation tax credits, as can barns that are part of income-producing farms.   To receive State tax credits for rehabilitating private residences, the property must be in a qualifying census tract.  Residential owners are encouraged to seek grants or funding through non-for-profits or other sources.

To apply for consideration to be placed on the National Register, your building must be at least 50 years old and meet the Department's standards of significance and integrity.  The process starts with the New York State Historical Preservation Office, which ultimately would make the recommendation to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C.  The link to the Preliminary Information Form on the State's website is found below.  Cazenovia Heritage will be happy to assist you in preparing and/or reviewing the application prior to submission.
